Rachel must contend with socialites and Nick’s overbearing mother hell bent on breaking them up.

Constance Wu known for her role as Jessica Huang on Fresh Off the Boat plays Rachel Wu Malaysian TV host Henry Golding plays Nick Young. Golding is relatively new to the world of Hollywood but you wouldn’t know that based on the stellar job he does in Crazy Rich Asians.

2. The Proposal

Best Rom Coms - The Proposal

See More Images & Info

Though this movie is over a decade old now (released in 2009), The Proposal still tops the list as one of the best rom coms out there. With a star-studded cast and some of the best comedic timing we’ve ever seen, this is one of those movies you’ll want to curl up on the couch alongside your sweetie with.

Synopsis

The movie revolves around book editor Margaret Tate as she grapples with deportation back to her native land of Canada. To avoid being deported, Margaret convinces her assistant Andrew Paxton to pretend to be her fiance. Andrew agrees to go along with the charade, but adds a few conditions of his own, the most hilarious of which includes jet setting off to Alaska to meet his wild family.

Cast

As we mentioned in the introduction, this film is full of star power. Margaret Tate is played by Sandra Bullock. While Ryan Reynolds, most notably known for his role as Deadpool, plays her assistant. Also included in the cast is the always amazing Mary Steenburgen, do-no-wrong Betty White, and Craig T. Nelson of Coach fame.

Our Opinion

Though the film received mixed reviews from critics (what rom com doesn’t, though?), we still throw this DVD in whenever we need a good laugh. The chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds is something that the world needs to see again in another movie in the future. Reynolds doesn’t miss a chance to show off his razor-sharp wit and Bullock’s expressions and comedic timing is unbeatable.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You

Best Rom Coms - 10 Things I Hate About You

See More Images & Info

Is there any other rom com that’s as deliciously nineties as 10 Things I Hate About You? Released in 1999, this flick features a recognizable cast that’s a cult classic with impressive character development and unforgettable storylines.

Synopsis

The movie follows beautiful, smart, and very strong-willed teen Kat Stratford. Her sometimes abrasive personality means that she’s not necessarily a hit with the boys in her school, much to the chagrin of her younger sister Bianca, who is forbidden from dating until her old sister has a boyfriend (weird house rule, but we’re not judging). Patrick Verona, a handsome new arrival at the high school, maybe just who Kat needs to let her guard down.

Cast

The 10 Things I Hate About You cast are unforgettable. Kat Stratford is played by Julia Stiles, who was hitting her stride in the late ’90s when this flick was filmed. Larisa Oleynik, known for her role as Alex Mack on the Nickelodeon show The Secret World of Alex Mack, plays Bianca. Patrick Verona is played by Heath Ledger, who had secured his first big Hollywood role in this movie. Other supporting cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Gabrielle Union.

Our Opinion

Nineties kids unite! There is no quintessential 90s rom com like 10 Things I Hate About You. Everything from the clothing, hairstyles, music, and slang will provide a nostalgic blast-from-the-past moment for anyone who grew up in the 90s. The cast, fun storyline, and oh-so-memorable and heart-wrenching poetry reciting scene make this flick one you can watch over and over.

6. The Wedding Singer

Best Rom Coms - The Wedding Singer

See More Images & Info

What top ten list of best rom coms would be complete without an Adam Sandler flick? The Wedding Singer is one of the best Sandler movies from his prime in the 90s. While not Oscar or Academy Award worthy like some of the others on our list, this movie is a fun must-see that holds up despite being more than 20 years old at the time of writing.

Synopsis

The movie follows good-hearted wedding singer Robbie Hart going rogue after his fiance abandons him at the altar. He meets Julia Sullivan as he’s working a wedding one night and his life changes forever. The two quickly fall head-over-heels for each other but Julia is set to marry Glenn Guglia, a man-whore who clearly has no respect for women, not even his own fiance. The movie is set in the ‘80s so be prepared for some fantastic throwback music and wild hairstyles.

Cast

Adam Sandler plays the lead male character, while Drew Barrymore snagged the role of Julia Sullivan. Chrstine Taylor plays Julia’s cousin. Allen Covert, who we’re all used to seeing in many of Sandler’s films, plays his best friend Sammy. Of course, Sandler fans can expect to see he’s brought along his usual trove of buddies to play roles in this film including Steve Buscemi, Peter Dante, and Jon Lovitz.

Our Opinion

The Wedding Singer is one of those movies that just never gets old. It’s funny, it’s relatable, and it’s even a little heartwarming. The chemistry between Sandler and Barrymore is palpable. Perhaps that’s why they’ve gone on to star together in other movies like 50 First Dates and Blended.

7. It’s Complicated

Best Rom Coms - It's Complicated

See More Images & Info

Is there such a thing as a rom com that’s not complicated? We don’t think so, but this movie takes it up a hilarious notch. Its star-filled cast takes a new look at marriage, divorce, and all the hilarious things that can happen in between.

Synopsis

The movie follows a wildly successful bakery owner, Jane, and her relationship with her ex-husband Jake. They’ve been divorced for many years, but managed to remain friends. A sudden change-of-heart one evening turns into an affair and makes Jane the other woman in Jake’s new marriage. Meanwhile, Adam, the architect remodeling Jane’s kitchen, finds himself falling madly in love with her, completing a hilarious love-triangle.

Cast

Jane is played by the always fabulous Meryl Streep while Alec Baldwin plays her ex-husband/current lover Jake. Steven Martin plays Adam, completing the love triangle. Supporting cast members include John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Rita Wilson, and Hunter Parrish.

Our Opinion

This movie wasn’t ever going to win any big-time awards or become a cult classic like some of the others on our list. But it’s not going to leave you yawning or checking your watch, waiting for it to end. You won’t be able to take your eyes off of the always captivating Streep! It’s Complicated is balanced, funny, and a little bit cliche at times, but worth a watch in our books!

8. 13 Going on 30

Best Rom Coms - 13 Going on 30

See More Images & Info

This darling 2004 film is an absolute must-see for anyone looking for a hilarious rom com to watch on date night. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and its premise is unique and more memorable than many of the others in our buying guide.

Synopsis

The movie follows the 13-year-old Jenna, who makes a wish one night at her humiliating birthday party that she would wake up as an adult. As you can imagine, the impossible happens overnight and Jenna wakes up in her luxury apartment with a half-naked man standing in her bathroom thanking her for the night before. Jenna soon realizes that her dream has come true and she’s transformed into a 30-year-old overnight. Now she must figure out how to act like the adult she’s supposed as she balances her dream job and tries to rekindle her friendship with her childhood friend Matt who has been in love with her all this time.

Cast

Jenna Rink is played by the beautiful and versatile Jennifer Garner. Mark Ruffalo plays Jenna’s best friend Matt. The supporting cast features many lesser known names in the business like Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, and Lynn Collins. Though the leading male and lady are the biggest names in the cast line, the supporting characters do a great job of making a name for themselves in this flick.

Our Opinion

13 Going on 30 is a funny and charming rom com full of delicious ‘80s references and likable characters. While it’s a bit predictable at times, it’s still worth a viewing. Watch this movie if not for anything but to watch an adult Jenna act like a 13-year-old amongst her well-to-do adult peers.

9. Something’s Gotta Give

Best Rom Coms - Something's Gotta Give

See More Images & Info

This smart and funny rom com features several well-known celebrities that make it worth the watch even if you’re not into this genre at all. Both main characters were nominated for Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, with the actress actually winning the award.

Synopsis

The movie follows an aging womanizer named Harry and his much-younger girlfriend, Marin, as they visit her family’s beach house in the Hamptons. Marin’s mother, Erica, is also spending the weekend at the beach house and after a medical emergency, Harry finds himself falling for her mother.

Cast

The cast of Something’s Gotta Give is truly something to behold. We have the incredibly versatile Jack Nicolhson playing Harry. Amanda Peet plays his stunning young girlfriend Marin and her mother is played by Diane Keaton. Supporting cast members include big names like Keanu Reeves, Jon Favreau, and Paul Michasel Glaser of Starsky and Hutch fame.

Our Opinion

This movie is a pleasure to watch, especially seeing how the stars interact with one another. It’s a refreshing crowd-pleaser that’s witty, charming, and absolutely delightful. Though it can be a bit predictable at times, we still think it’s worth a watch.

10. Bridget Jones’s Diary

Best Rom Coms - Bridget Jones's Diary

See More Images & Info

Last but not least in our list of the best rom coms, is the always fantastic Bridget Jones’s Diary. This flick is a bit of a cult classic and has found its way to becoming a part of English Pop Culture over the years. Some people even consider Bridget Jones to be a British Culture Icon. One watch and it’s not hard to see why people just adore this movie and the book it’s based upon.

Synopsis

The movie follows Bridget Jones, a 30-something looking to take control of her life. She starts using a diary as an outlet. Nothing is off limits in her provocative, hilarious, and sometimes erotic book that she’s writing. Bridget soon finds her charming boss flirting with her and falls head over heels for him, but are the feelings reciprocated? What about Mark Darcy, a man she keeps running into who seems to be into her? Is he truly as repulsive as she originally thought?

Cast

There are some really big name stars in the cast for this flick. Bridget is played by Renee Zellweger and her boss is played by Hugh Grant. Colin Firth plays Mark Darcy. Other cast members include Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent, and Embeth Davidtz.

Our Opinion

Bridget Jones’s Diary might be one of the best rom coms of the 2000s. It sparked two sequels – Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Bridget Jones’s Baby, though neither of which were as widely lauded as the original. Zellweger is a likable and funny character which gives the movie a lot of charm.

Our Conclusion

Rom coms aren’t loved by everyone, but they’re great movies to watch when you want to forget what’s going on in the world and just lose yourself in an outrageous storyline. We hope that you’ve found new movies to add to your “to watch” list from our buying guide. Be sure to let us know what you think is the best romantic comedy of all time!
